Mama, the countdown is ON! Whether you’re a first-time mama or prepping for baby #2 (or more!), packing your hospital bag can feel a little overwhelming. You’ve probably seen a million lists floating around the internet, but let’s keep it real—there’s what they say you need, and then there’s what you’ll actually use.
I’ve been there, done that—and I’m here to share the essentials that made a big difference, the nice-to-haves, and what you can totally leave at home.

✔️ For You, Mama
Let’s take care of YOU first—because you can’t pour from an empty cup.
1. Comfy Robe & Nightgown
Something cozy and nursing-friendly if you plan to breastfeed. Think soft, stretchy, and easy-access.
2. Nursing Bra + Breast Pads
Even if you’re unsure about breastfeeding, these help with early leaks and comfort.
3. Slippers or Grippy Socks
Hospital floors = not the coziest. Keep your toes warm and your steps safe!
4. Toiletries
Pack travel-size essentials:
- Toothbrush + toothpaste
- Face wash
- Deodorant
- Dry shampoo (life-saver!)
- Hair ties or headbands
- Lip balm (hospitals = dry air)
5. Adult Diapers or Postpartum Underwear
Yes, the hospital usually provides mesh undies, but trust me—Always Discreet or Frida Mom postpartum underwear = game changer.
6. Going-Home Outfit
Think stretchy, breathable, and bump-friendly. (You’ll still look about 6 months pregnant after birth—it’s normal!)
7. Phone Charger (Extra Long Cord)
Those hospital outlets are never where you need them to be.
I made a checklist for you to download at home and make it easier for you to not miss a thing!! :)

🧸 For Baby:
1. Going-Home Outfit
Pick something weather-appropriate and adorable for those first photos.
2. Swaddle or Blanket
Hospitals provide them, but if you want a special one for photos or softness, bring your own!
3. Newborn Hat & Mittens
Keep baby warm and protect from accidental scratches.
4. Car Seat (installed!)
You won’t be able to leave the hospital without it, so make sure it’s ready to go!
Optional: A pacifier, though many hospitals provide one if needed.
💼 Other Good-to-Haves:
1. Folder for Important Paperwork
Birth certificate info, ID, insurance card, etc. Stay organized!
2. Snacks + Drinks
After delivery, you’ll be starving. Pack some granola bars, trail mix, coconut water, or whatever you love.
3. Reusable Water Bottle
Labor is thirsty work. Get one with a straw for easier sipping.
4. Essential Oils or Calming Items (optional)
If you’re into aromatherapy, lavender oil or a calming rollerball can make a difference.
🛑 What You Can Skip:
- Tons of diapers or wipes (the hospital’s got you covered)
- Fancy postpartum gear (save it for home)
- Makeup (unless you want it for photos)
- Too many outfits for baby (one or two is enough!)
Final Tip:
Pack your bag around 35–36 weeks—just in case baby has plans of their own. And if you’re a list-lover like me, keep it all in a cute printable or checklist on your phone so you don’t forget a thing.
💕 You got this, mama.
Whether you’re planning a natural birth, c-section, or however your story unfolds—remember this: you are strong, you are ready, and you’re about to meet the little love of your life.
If you found this list helpful, feel free to share it with another mama-to-be! And drop your must-haves in the comments—I’d love to hear what helped YOU the most in the hospital.
