10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Mom

Pregnancy is beautiful, messy, and full of surprises. Whether you’re a first-time mama or adding another little love to your life, here are 10 things I wish someone had told me before I had my baby.

Motherhood hits different when it’s your body, your heart, and your world changing all at once. There’s so much love, but also so much learning. So from one mama to another, here’s what I’ve learned—and what I hope helps you along the way.

1. It’s okay not to love every second.

You’ll be told to soak it all in. And yes, you should. But also? It’s okay to feel tired, overwhelmed, or like you need a moment. You’re human—and you’re doing your best.

2. Your instincts are stronger than you think.

You’ll second-guess yourself a lot, especially in the beginning. But mama, your gut will guide you more than any book ever could.

3. Prep is helpful, but don’t overdo it.

Yes, nesting is real. But babies don’t need a million gadgets. Focus on the basics: diapers, wipes, comfy clothes, and lots of love.

4. The postpartum phase is real—and powerful.

It’s not just about recovery. It’s about transformation. Be gentle with yourself as you adjust, heal, and find your new rhythm.

5. Ask for help. Seriously.

You don’t have to prove you can do it all. Accept meals. Ask someone to watch the baby so you can shower. Let others support you—you deserve it.

6. You’ll Google everything—and that’s normal.

From baby poop color to sleep regressions, it’s all part of the journey. Just remember, every baby is different.

7. There’s no one-size-fits-all for baby gear.

What worked for your friend may not work for you. Choose what feels right for your lifestyle (and your sanity).

8. Take pictures, but also be present.

Yes, capture the moments. But don’t stress about perfection. The messy, real moments are the ones that stick with you.

9. Bonding isn’t always instant.

And that’s okay. Love grows. If it takes a few days—or weeks—to fully connect, know that it’s normal.

10. You are the best mom for your baby.

No one can love your baby like you do. Trust that you’re exactly who they need.

Motherhood is beautiful, raw, and unlike anything else. Give yourself grace, soak up the cuddles, and remember—you’re not alone. Every mama starts somewhere.
